Der Ort des Konzerts des Răzvan-Florescu-Quartetts widerspiegelte Elemente der Musik der Gruppe. Die PKS-Villa Rothstein in Bad Ischl widmet sich der Erforschung der Spirale und des Wassers. Das Konzert verlief in einem organischen Fluss, wie Wasser, das sich auf unerwartete Weise seinen Weg bahnt. Dabei ist es faszinierend, dass, wenn man einer Spirale folgt, zwar weit kommen kann, aber nie weit vom Ausgangspunkt entfernt ist. Tatsächlich hatte man bei diesem Quartett nie das Gefühl, dass die Reise, auf die wir mitgenommen wurden, allzu weit vom „Herzen“ der Musik entfernt war.
Die Organisation „Jazzfreunde“ zeichnet sich aus, dass sie nach interessanten und überraschenden Orten Ausschau hält, die zur fantasievollen Programmauswahl passen. Es handelt sich um eine sorgfältig kuratierte Konzert-Reihe des engagierten Emilian Tantana mit einem Dutzend Konzerten pro Jahr.
Vor etwa einem Monat war ich da, um mir ein neues Projekt des Pianisten Hans Koller anzuhören, zusammen mit dem Saxophonisten John O’Gallagher und einigen ehemaligen und aktuellen Studierenden des Trinity Laban, darunter Rebecka Edlund, Sasha Harlan und Tom Sheen.
Es ist Tantana´s Verdienst, dass er eine treue Anhängerschaft hat, sodass bei Auftritten wie dem des jungen Quartetts von Florescu der Veranstaltungsort, der offiziell für 100 Personen ausgelegt war, mehr als voll war. Alle waren gekommen, weil das Publikum darauf vertraute, dass es ein gutes Konzert erwarten würde. Und das tat es auch, denn trotzdem die Musiker fast zwei Tage lang gereist waren, waren sie motiviert, an diesem faszinierenden Veranstaltungsort ihr Bestes zu geben.
Drei Wörter, mit denen ich die Musik dieser jungen Band beschreiben würde, wären „entspannt“, „präzise“ und „positiv“. Das kam in ihrem Auftritt deutlich zum Ausdruck.
Mit Vorbildern wie Bobby Hutcherson, der in ihrer Musik erwähnt, jedoch ins heute übertragen wird.
Răzvan Florescu nutzte den schönen Klang des Instruments, indem er in der Regel sorgfältig auf die Platzierung der Noten achtete und es mit virtuosen Elementen in seinem Spiel nicht übertrieb – obwohl er doch hin und wieder zeigte, dass er dazu in der Lage wäre. Stilistisch ist das Ganze ziemlich vielfältig. Es beginnt ruhig und zieht uns als Publikum in seinen Bann, wobei ein gleichmäßiger Groove das Vibraphon und das Keyboard in den Raum schweben lässt. Dann gibt es Stücke wie „Hurry Up“ mit einem elegischen Klaviersolo und „Tabasco“, das mit dem energiegeladenen Bass von Dimitrie Cristian Milea eher einen Fusion-Funk-Charakter hat. Um den Klang noch vielfältiger zu gestalten, setzt Florescu zudem einen Xylosynth ein, mit dem er seine eigene Klangwelt variieren kann. Vlad Briciu am Keyboard meisterte mit Bravour eine Hommage an den Bassisten Avishai Cohen.
Es handelt sich um eine junge Band, die sich ihres europäischen Erbes sehr bewusst ist. Florescu gilt als einer der Vertreter der neuen, dynamischen Generation von Vibraphonisten, von denen es in London – neben Musikern wie Jim Hart und Jonny Mansfield – immer mehr gibt.

The location of the gig by the Răzvan Florescu quartet had elements that reflected the music of the group. The PKS villa Rothstein in Bad Ischl is dedicated to looking at the role of the spiral and water. There was an organic flow to the gig like water meandering down in unexpected ways. Meanwhile, it is intriguing that, if you follow a spiral you can go a long way, but never be too far from the starting point. And indeed with the quartet, the journey we were taken on never felt too far removed from the “heart” of the music.
The Jazzfreunde (“Jazz Friends”) organization has a certain element where it looks towards interesting and surprising places to match an imaginative choice of programming. It’s a carefully curated series by the hard-working Emilian Tantana with just a dozen gigs a year. So, I had been there about a month ago to hear a special new project of pianist Hans Koller, with saxophonist John O’Gallagher and some former and current students of Trinity Laban, such as Rebecka Edlund, Sasha Harlan and Tom Sheen.
All credit to Tantana that he has a core following, such that at gigs like the young quartet of Florescu, the venue, officially meant for 100 was more than packed. All there because the audience trusted that they would get a good gig. And indeed they did, because having travelled for nearly two days, the musicians were inspired to deliver in this fascinating venue.
Three words that I would feel to express the music of this young band would be “relaxed”, “tight” and “positive”. This came through in the performance. With heroes such as Bobby Hutcherson, name checked in the music, but bringing it forward to 2026.
Răzvan Florescu would take advantage of the ringing sound of the instrument by usually being careful in the note placement and not overdoing virtuoso elements of his playing which he nevertheless showed from time to time that he is capable of. Stylistically it’s pretty diverse. Starting steadily, drawing us in as the audience, with a steady groove allowing the vibes and keyboard to float into space. Then tunes like “Hurry Up”, with an elegiac piano solo and “Tabasco” having more of a fusion-funk feel with an energetic bass of Dimitrie Cristian Milea. To give even more diversity of sound, Florescu also uses a xylosynth, where he too has the ability to vary his own sound world. Vlad Briciu on keyboards was adept in a tribute to bassist Avishai Cohen.
It’s a young band, very aware of their European heritage, with Florescu staking a claim to be one of the new dynamic generation of vibes players, which we are seeing more and more of in London, with the likes of Jim Hart and Jonny Mansfield.
